In 1997 I traveled to Kenya with Dr. Martha MacGuffie to document her medical work with children there. Among her many projects was the treatment of children in Nairobi Hospital who suffered from the disfiguring disease, Burkitt’s Syndrome. Her orphanage in Mbita and her island clinic on Lake Victoria are also shown in this portfolio.

The textures of those surroundings and the beautiful blackness of the children’s skin led me to seek out a process, other than conventional film, to convey what I had experienced. For me, many possibilities lay in the 19th Century, when the fever to discover ways to make images with light and chemistry began in Europe and England.
